Fulfilling Our Equality Duties

To ensure that the services we provide take account of the diverse needs of our customers and that we retain and develop talented people from all parts of the community. As part of meeting our Public Sector Equality Duty we have updated our Single Equality Plan (1.04MB PDF). This outlines what we are currently doing to improve our performance in terms of equality and paves the way for future equality objectives. This plan forms part of the Department for Transport's Single Equality Scheme

We have made good progress against the first year of commitments and are reviewing the commitments for 2011-2012 to ensure that they take full account of the Public Sector Equality Duty. A report will be published once this review is complete.

Our decision makers pay due regard to the requirements of the equality duty by ensuring that they have sufficient information to give proper consideration to the potential impacts of their proposed decisions on people with protected characteristics. This section describes the processes we use and the information we are considering.

Equality Impact Assessments must be carried out for all new relevant policies to ensure that the needs of different customer groups are proactively considered and that equal outcomes can be achieved wherever possible. All existing policies that are relevant to our equality duties must also be impact assessed. These have been prioritised and we are gradually working through the programme.
