Equality Action Plans
Our Race Action Plan for 2008-2011 (PDF 42.6KB), part of Department for Transport’s Race Equality Scheme builds on progress made since 2002. Examples of our key achievements are:
- Development of a multi lingual phrase book for Traffic Officers to use with customers who do not speak English
- Incorporating clauses into our model contract documents to ensure that our partners throughout the supply chain understand the need for them to deliver against our equality duties
- Supporting 15 staff through 3 positive action leadership development programmes.

Our current plan focuses on two broad themes: better understanding our customer needs and developing greater capability to deliver against our race equality duties.
Our Disability Action Plan for 2006-2009 (PDF 339KB) is part of the Department of Transport’s Disability Equality Scheme. We have done a lot of work to identify and start to address the physical barriers disabled people face when trying to use our network. This plan is our next step to delivering disability equality and to developing a culture which better understands the needs of our disabled customers as well as develops policies and practice which take account of these needs. Progress has been made over the first year of the plan as outlined in our Annual Report (PDF 339KB). We have also published annual reports on progress against our disablity and gender action plans (please see below).
Our Gender Action Plan for 2007-2010 (PDF 74.4KB) is part of the Department for Transport's Gender Equality Scheme. It outlines the work we will do to: understand the different needs of men and women using the services we provide, identify and close gaps in results and experiences of these two groups.
