Data Usage - Fair Processing Notice

The Highways Agency has a duty to protect the public funds we administer.

In order to prevent and detect fraud we may share information provided to us with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds.

The Highways Agency is a participant  in the National Fraud Initiative carried out by the Audit Committee.

For several years the Audit Commission has conducted the National Fraud Initiative, a data matching exercises across local authorities. Data matching involves comparing computer records held by one body against other computer records held by the same or another body to see how far they match. This is usually personal information. Computerised data matching allows fraudulent claims and payments to be identified.

The Serious Crime Act 2007 gives the Audit Commission new statutory powers which enable Government Departments and other bodies to participate, on a voluntary basis, in the NFI. It does not require the consent of the individuals concerned under the Data Protection Act 1998.

Our participation in this exercise will assist in the prevention and detection of fraud against us and other organisations within the public sector.

Further information on the National Fraud Initiative can be found at www.audit-commission.gov.uk/nfi or by contacting the:
