The Highways Agency is on an important journey - and we need people with strong leadership skills who relish opportunity and challenge.

We're moving from simply being a road builder to a more demanding customer service organisation. Our new role puts emphasis on such things as making better use of the existing road capacity, providing better information to influence drivers, and using traffic officers to ensure traffic runs smoothly.

Our aim of safe roads, reliable journeys, and informed travellers is all about helping drivers, but we also have a responsibility for protecting the environment and those affected by our roads.

With traffic levels increasing, customer expectations rising, and the need to ensure value for money, we need dynamic leaders who can inspire our own staff and ensure the 30,000 people employed in our supply chain are working in the right customer service direction. We have a good reputation on which to build, a record of project delivery, well-established maintenance and improvement activity, and a strong safety record on one of the busiest networks in the world.

We need people from a range of specialisms, disciplines and backgrounds - including those who may have gained their skills in other fields in the private and public sector. The common feature is leadership - the ability to get the best out of others and make difficult things happen.
