Route to leadership : For Generalists

We build roads. We develop new technologies. We operate communications networks as well as highway networks. We work with schools to promote safety, and government to shape policy. We protect the environment. We procure £multi-million contracts. We employ and nurture a multi-talented workforce.

Such a diverse and dynamic organisation needs to be led by people with a holistic grasp of our business and 360-degree vision of where we're heading. Our generalist route is designed for that very purpose. It takes you on a two-year tour of growing responsibility through Network Services, Network Delivery and Development, Major Projects, Finance and Business Services Directorates (see Business Directorates for the full picture).

At the end of the programme you will have gained the insight, built the confidence, acquired the contacts and developed the skills that we hope will one day make you a future leader of the Highways Agency.

If you were to change places right now with one of our current generalist graduates, you could find yourself managing a multi-million pound portfolio of road schemes. Or you could be involved in 'Managed Motorways', using a range of innovative technologies combined with new operating procedures to actively control traffic flow perhaps travelling abroad to learn from similar systems. Then again, you might be developing a national campaign to promote car sharing and sustainable travel. It's also possible you'll have contact with Ministers and will be formulating ideas and policies at a strategic level.
