Scheme Outline: Engineering

Engineering Leadership Development Scheme

The engineering graduate leadership scheme is aimed at electrical and civil engineers. On this scheme you can expect to spend your first three years gaining broad experience in many business areas and working towards chartered engineer status, while at the same time developing the skills that we hope will one day make you a future leader of the HA.

Civil Engineering leadership posts are likely to be based in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bedford, Dorking and Bristol. Electrical Engineering posts will be based in Bristol and Birmingham.

You will have the opportunity to work in several business areas over a three year period. These business areas include:

  • Major Projects
  • Traffic Operations
  • Safety Standards & Research

For more information on these Directorates please see our page on our Business Areas.

The purpose of the placements is to ensure that you:

  • Broaden your knowledge
  • Gain experience and develop your leadership skills
  • Gain project management skills

You will also work with our suppliers to gain wider experience. Wherever you are though, you will get the chance to work on some exciting projects that really add value to society!

To ensure you achieve chartership we offered a structured development programme, and a mentor who is an established engineer within our business. They will help ensure you are getting a broad experience and competence base in order that you can meet your objectives and become chartered.

At the end of the three year scheme you will have an interview, and provided you are successful you will take on your first management role. You will then spend a few years consolidating your experience before going on to your professional review and chartered engineer status.

As well as gaining an enormous breadth of hands-on experience, you will have a range of more formal development opportunities, including specific training courses, coaching, and job shadowing and mentoring.
