Traffic Officer Recruitment Process

Thank you for applying for a job with the Highways Agency.

To make sure the way we recruit people is fair, objective and open, everyone who applies for the same role will go through the same screening and assessment process.

So we can make a fair and balanced assessment of your skills we'll ask you to complete an application form, an achievement record and a diversity questionnaire. The first two documents are compulsory and allow us to assess your skills and experience with everyone else who also applied.

The diversity questionnaire isn't compulsory, but it helps us to ensure that all communities are fully and fairly reflected at the Highways Agency. This information won't be used to assess you in any way, only the information you supply in the application form and achievement record will be used to assess you.

When you return your completed application, we'll acknowledge receipt of it within 2 working days. If you've applied by email, you will receive an email confirming receipt. If you return your application by post, we'll confirm receipt by mail.

We will then assess your application.

The screening stage consists of two parts:

  • Part one- we'll compare your application form details against the eligibility criteria of the role you've applied for
  • Part two- we'll assess your achievement record to see whether you have the competencies to successfully carry out the role

You'll need to pass both parts to be invited to an assessment centre. We will contact you at least five days before the event to make sure that you can make it.

Assessment Centre

You'll be asked to take part in a number of exercises including a role-play and a competency-based interview. We'll let you know as soon as possible how you got on.

If you're successful at the assessment centre but don't get one of the available vacancies, you'll have the option to be placed on a waiting list for a period of up to 12 months for future vacancies as and when they arise. Once you are offered a position the Appointments Team will begin the employment, security, criminal and medical checks which you will need to pass before you can start your training.

Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS)

If you consider that you may have a disability and are eligible to apply under the GIS scheme, you will automatically be put forward to the assessment centre stage as long as if you satisfy the eligibility criteria and reach the minimum acceptable score in each of the competencies on the achievement record.

If you have any queries about the recruitment process, please call the enquiry line on 0800 917 4441 for more information.
