The Highways Agency is here to help millions of people get to where they want to go safely and reliably. We are responsible for maintaining and improving England’s strategic road network. Valued at over £81 billion, the network is vast. A third of all road traffic and two thirds of all heavy freight traffic use our roads - and this certainly takes its toll. In fact, we spend half our annual budget maintaining the network.
The Highways Agency Network Operations Directorate is responsible for managing age deterioration and traffic wear through contractors. Minimising the cost of these contracts forms the heart of the Highways Agency’s long-term strategy. To this end the Directorate is giving their regional senior managers genuine scope and autonomy to deliver better value-for-money from contractors.
