Engineering

Destination # 2: Engineering

Graduate

The Highways Agency is at the heart of some of the biggest and most complex engineering projects you’ll find anywhere. Whether it’s a road improvement scheme with sensitive environmental issues, or a traffic management system integrating various communications networks, we can offer a uniquely rich tapestry of experience through placements over a three year period. These are likely to be divided between Major Projects and Network Operations (click this link to find out more about each Directorate).

Being with the Highways Agency puts you in a unique learning situation, because our partners include the biggest and best names in consulting and contracting, and you’ll probably spend some time seconded to one or more of them during your training.

Civil Engineering positions are likely to be based in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bedford, Dorking or Bristol. Electrical Engineering posts will be in Bristol or Birmingham.

Wherever you are, you’ll be working with and learning from many of the best professionals in their field. Project management responsibility will come early and grow rapidly, as this is the key skill for engineering leaders. The fact that we’ve cut the typical time to build a road scheme from 12-15 years down to 7 years tells you that we’re at the cutting edge of project management innovation. What better environment in which to develop the expertise for Chartered Engineer status?

Placements will usually last between 12 and 15 months, and will be underpinned by structured development including technical and leadership training, coaching, job shadowing and mentoring. At the end of the three year scheme you will be in line for your first management role, then consolidating your experience and progressing towards chartered status.
