M62 - Your Local History
A lot of finds were uncovered during the archaeological evaluation carried out for the M62 Junction 6 Improvement scheme so we thought it would be nice to provide an interactive website so you can see what we found.

Don't Cross or Walk Along Motorways
The Highways Agency aims to make more people aware of the dangers of walking or crossing our motorway. We have launched a poster and radio campaign aimed at 16-25yr olds. Hopefully with our hard hitting posters, our message will come across.

Driver Information Programmes
Driver Information Programmes
Our research shows that accidents and unplanned incidents cause up to 25% of delays on the strategic road network.
Reducing accidents and the disruption they cause, and helping drivers to avoid delays when they occur, will have a major impact on journey reliability, as well and preventing injuries and saving lives.
We need to bring down the number of casualties on our roads. Our roads are among the safest in the world but despite this 340 people were killed on them in 2008.
We have identified the 10 groups of customers who use our road network and looked at how to communicate directly with each of them.
The Driver Information Programmes (DIPs) are, primarily, targeted at the four driver groups who are, statistically, most at risk on our motorways and major A roads. However as we learn of new issues, we develop new DIPs offering advice to drivers across these varied topics.
- Young drivers aged 16 - 19

- Motorcyclists

- Commercial Vehicles (i.e. HGV/LGV) drivers

- Drivers on Business

- Motorway Driving

- Female Drivers

- Are You Safely Fitted?
- Are you Fit to Tow?

- Respect our Road Workers

- Disabled People

- DeerAware

- Young Pedestrians

- Careful! Considerate! Correct!

We believe that behaviour change in these target groups of road users would help to reduce accidents, injuries and deaths on the strategic road network.
We also believe that an innovative and specifically targeted approach is required for each of these traditionally hard to influence groups.
See the links in the right hand menu on this page to learn more about how we will work with our customers to reduce accidents.
The Strategic Safety Action Plan (SSAP)
This document summarises how we aim to achieve our Public Service Agreement target to reduce the number of casualties on our network by 2010.
The plan sets out the policy and processes that the Agency have put into place to develop a communication strategy with the Department for Transport, their agencies and our partners to further strengthen our support in raising awareness of road safety issues through new education and information initiatives.
The DIPs toolkit will be available to all our Area teams so they can work with local partners to disseminate the programmes to our customers.
We have an extensive list of partners created at national level, (available on the "Partners" page - see right hand menu), that Area Teams can tap into to build local links.
