Dynamic Plan Generation
Introduction
The process of deciding fixed diversion plans involves much debate, which can make the process lengthy and expensive, both in the initial build process, and for maintenance in response to network changes.
Because of the complexities involved in developing and maintaining a fixed library of diversion plans, experience has shown that it can become neglected.
The Dynamic Plan Generation system will avoid the need for fixed plans and will, instead, create plans in real-time in response to an incident. This will result in more efficient use of the UK road network and lead to an overall reduction in congestion.
What are the inputs and outputs?
As input, the system requires:
- CONTRAM network file
- Origin-destination matrix
- Link cost database
- VMS characteristics
As output, the system returns the VMS included in the diversion plan and their associated diversion messages.
What are the future applications?
Initially, the system could be used to generate static diversion plans. Diversion plans generated by the Dynamic Plan Generation would take into account detailed factors such as diversion link capacities and typical traffic conditions on the surrounding network. This could lead to more efficient diversion plans.
The system is created to generate diversion plans but could be adapted to help determine the most suitable location of VMS.
How does it work?
The Dynamic Plan Generation system is intended to create diversion messages for display on VMS, and for the diversion plans to be strategic in nature.
The system will perform the following tasks to determine the most appropriate diversion plan:
- Identify a VMS.
- Identify possible diversion routes.
- Create a diversion message.
- Repeat from stage (1) for next VMS
