Lightweight Gantry Technology

Introduction

In the past year, the Agency has conducted research into the use of passively safe structural technology for gantry installations, culminating in the off-road trial of a gantry structure in October 2005.  These structures offer increased safety to the road user from their lightweight, frangible construction and also potential for reduced whole life costs of gantry installations.

However, the current technology supported by gantries, i.e. Variable Message Signs (VMS) etc, are not lightweight; conflicting with the principle of passively safe design. This is largely due to the current Agency design standards and operational requirements.  This project aims to deliver future gantry mounted technology which compliments the lightweight and passively safe gantry structures.

Initial work on this topic has begun to raise awareness with manufacturers of the agency's direction towards passively safe and lightweight gantry & technology solutions.

This project will be conducted in two phases:

  • Phase 1- Production of a performance specification(s)
  • Phase 2 - Management and support for the future gantry technology trial

What are the objectives?

The headline objective is to research and manage the delivery of a performance specification(s) for the next generation of cost effective, lightweight motorway signs to complement passively safe gantry design for use on future controlled motorways.

Primary objectives

  • Produce performance specification(s)
  • Produce a procurement plan to assist the prototype and trial phase

Secondary Objectives

  • Identify and challenge robust restrictions with HA standards and design constraints
  • Assess and coordinate requirements of the lightweight gantry structural scheme
  • Provide supporting information on gantry mounted technologies (other than motorway signs and signals)
  • Provide an explanatory note summarising the new elements within the specification
  • Provide supporting information to aid the investigation of integrated technology and gantry solutions
