Regional Control Centres

Introduction

We have implemented a network of seven regional control centres across England, to be jointly staffed by the Police and the Agency.

Regional Control Centres will be primarily responsible for the management and operations of the Traffic Officer Service and will be focused on responding to traffic incidents.

Other responsibilities include:

  • planning for roadworks
  • monitoring road conditions (through CCTV and loops)
  • allocating resources
  • establishing diversion alternatives
  • setting regional electronic roadsigns.

What are the regions?

The National Traffic Control Centre collates information from all seven Regional Control Centres (see map) to provide information to travellers via strategic electronic road signs, telephone information lines, internet and traffic news media.

How is technology used?

Command and Control System

The Command & Control (C&C) system sets standards in improved officer safety and efficiency.

The Command & Control system offers the following functionality:

  • Incident management and logging
  • Resource management, including integration with Airwave for real-time vehicle location and status
  • Duty planning
  • Integration capabilities with the Police National Computer (PNC)
Airwave Radio

Airwave is the new digital communications system that will be used by all police forces in the UK. Airwave will replace the existing radio system and bring many benefits to policing.
