M62 - Your Local History
A lot of finds were uncovered during the archaeological evaluation carried out for the M62 Junction 6 Improvement scheme so we thought it would be nice to provide an interactive website so you can see what we found.

Highways Agency at Gardeners’ World
Introduction
We may seem like an unlikely exhibitor of a garden, but we do practice a form of gardening. We create woodland and manage it on a grand scale when building and maintaining our trunk roads and motorways.
We own 30,000 hectares of land next to our roads and 14,000 of those hectares are planted with trees and shrubs. We plant to achieve landscape integration and bio-diversity benefits. The trees screen the road from view and provide incidental benefits in absorbing some of the pollutants from the traffic.
- We plant about 1 MILLION trees a year
- We have 50 years experience of planting
- There is an estimated 32 MILLION trees on our road sides
- We establish wild flower communities
Butterflies thrive along our colourful verges and it is common to find more than a dozen different species at any one location. Our road verges are great places for wildlife and this is seen by the many kestrels, field voles, badgers, deer, squirrels and rabbits that choose to make their homes there. From Cornwall to Cumbria we are providing something of beauty and interest to see all year round.
