New removal powers for Traffic Officers - Public Consultation launched

On 29 November 2007, the public consultation over proposals to allow Traffic Officers to remove abandoned and broken down vehicles from the strategic road network starts.

The consultation will last for 12 weeks and we are inviting customers and other interested groups to comment on our proposals.

The proposed new legislation aims to:

  • Provide Traffic Officers with similar powers to the police, to request or remove abandoned and broken down vehicles, which are causing an obstruction or danger to other road users from the strategic road network
  • Provide the Secretary of State for Transport  with powers to store and dispose of abandoned vehicles removed by Traffic Officers
  • Allow the Secretary of State for Transport  to recover charges in respect of vehicles removed, stored or disposed of under the regulations
