M62 - Your Local History

A lot of finds were uncovered during the archaeological evaluation carried out for the M62 Junction 6 Improvement scheme so we thought it would be nice to provide an interactive website so you can see what we found.

Don't Cross or Walk Along Motorways

The Highways Agency aims to make more people aware of the dangers of walking or crossing our motorway. We have launched a poster and radio campaign aimed at 16-25yr olds. Hopefully with our hard hitting posters, our message will come across.

Summer Getaway Leaflet

A new online map (Summer getaway 2010) has been produced for visitors travelling to South West England highlighting potential peak travel times, as well as highlighting a variety of family attractions to visit en route to break the journey up.

This map has been produced as part of the Highways Agency's Summer Getaway Campaign, to encourage drivers to prepare for their holiday drive as they would for their holiday, and to break up the drive with exciting stops to avoid congestion at peak times.

'Summer Getaway 2010' is now in its fourth year and has been produced by the Highways Agency in partnership with South West Tourism. The map highlights useful information for visitors such as the best time to travel so visitors can plan for a safer, more reliable and enjoyable journey. It also mentions 36 family attractions which visitors can visit whilst driving through the South West including gardens, farmyard attractions, museums, safari parks and much more, so visitors will be spoilt for choice

Close to eight million visitors are attracted to the South West from all over the country during the summer months, seeking beautiful beaches, rugged coastlines, quaint villages, stately homes, ancient monuments, wild moors and tourist attractions dotting the region. However this creates plenty of traffic on the main roads. At peak times each weekend traffic hot spots delay visitors driving to their holiday destination and affect other traffic in and around the region.  The Highways Agency takes steps to help road users by limiting road works in the region during the summer to essential work only and by providing information to help road users plan their journeys.

Maureen McAlister, Director of Tourism, said:

"Driving to a holiday destination is the first part of the holiday experience and rather than visitors being caught up in peak traffic times, this useful map is a one stop shop for visitors coming down to the South West on holiday this year. It details the busy congestion points and offers advice about where to go and what to see en route, breaking up the journey and starting the holiday even sooner."

Malcolm Roberts, Highways Agency Area Performance Manager said:

"We are delighted that the leaflet has proved so popular and hope that visitors will continue to find it useful in planning their route and stopping points before they travel. Our advice is to avoid the busiest travel periods if you can and these periods are outlined in the leaflet."
