A Stone's Throw teaching pack
Just a Stone's Throw…
A teaching pack to help children understand the dangers of dropping objects on to the motorway has been developed by the Highways Agency, in partnership with its agent Mouchel Parkman, RoSPA, Surrey Police, Surrey County Council and the Fire Service
The pack, "Just a Stone's Throw…" is aimed at 10 and 11 year olds and is designed for use at special safety events such as Junior Citizens, Danger Rangers and other LASER schemes. These events use realistic settings where children can learn about keeping safe and preventing accidents in a safe environment. Youngsters work with safety experts, such as road safety and fire safety officers, who help them to think about how they would behave in risky situations in a controlled and supervised way.
The teaching pack warns that even the lightest/smallest object dropped or thrown from a height could cause severe damage if it were to hit a vehicle at speed. Children can participate in pre session lessons and there are activities to be used in the classroom after the event has taken place.
We hope this innovative education initiative will help children to understand the implications of objects being thrown onto motorways and other main roads.
Background
LASER (Learning About Safety by Experiencing Risk) schemes have been running in England since the mid 1980's. These schemes target 10-11year olds and there are approx 200 schemes registered with RoSPA. LASER schemes enable children to experience risk in managed situations where they can practice their safety skills. These schemes encourage good citizenship and a sense of community responsibility.
