M62 - Your Local History
A lot of finds were uncovered during the archaeological evaluation carried out for the M62 Junction 6 Improvement scheme so we thought it would be nice to provide an interactive website so you can see what we found.

Progress So Far
The Highways Agency has made good progress with implementing some of the improvements to the trunk road and motorway network as outlined in the Working in Partnership section of this web area. These may be, for example, at-grade pedestrian crossings, foot- and cycle-bridges, underpasses, cycle paths and lanes, use of semi-redundant parallel routes as cycle routes, and dropped kerbs and signing. In addition to this work, the Agency has investigated and made improvements where necessary at 15% of the identified crossing points in the Vulnerable User Crossing Improvement Programme. More details about the programme and our progress can be found in the Trunk Road Crossing Point section of this web site.
Some recent examples of our improvements are listed below.
Wilcott Footbridge
The Wilcott Footbridge over the A5 Nesscliffe Bypass in Shropshire opened in March 2003 and enables residents of Wilcott village to walk safely to Nesscliffe.

Skellingthorpe Cycleway
The Skellingthorpe Cycleway in Lincolnshire was completed in April 2003 in partnership with Sustrans, which provides a safe crossing point over the busy A46 and completes a missing section in Sustrans National Cycle Route No. 64 between Skellingthorpe and Lincoln.
Jane Coston Cycle Bridge
The Jane Coston Cycle Bridge, which was completed in May 2004, is a new cycle- and footbridge over the A14 in Cambridgeshire which links the village of Milton with the north of Cambridge, providing a safer and quicker route and linking with existing cycle-and footpaths.

Gamston Toucan Crossing
The Gamston Toucan Crossing in Nottingham was completed in April 2004 and is located immediately to the north of Old Tollerton Road. The crossing will provide a safer crossing point and contribute towards the aims of the Local Transport Plan by encouraging recreational and commuter use. It will also enable people to access the nearby Safeway supermarket and other local shops and services.

Britannia Bridge
The Britannia Bridge on the award-winning A650 Bingley Relief Road was opened in January 2004 and enables pedestrians and cyclists to travel between residential areas of Bingley in Yorkshire and the town centre.
A38 Footway / Cycleway / Bridleway
This combined footway/cycleway/bridleway is located over the A38 to the south of the Weeford Junction near Lichfield in Staffordshire. This replaces a surface level crossing point (which is still visible in the photograph) and provides links to the existing cycleway and footpath No 1 to the village of Weeford. The crossing point is particularly well used by cyclists and the bridge will provide a safe crossing point and alleviate community severance. (It should be noted that fencing to the approach ramps is not yet complete).

A43 Towcester Pegasus Crossing
This Pegasus crossing on the A43 at Towcester in Northamptonshire is similar to other light controlled crossing, but in addition to providing a provision for pedestrians and cyclists, the Pegasus crossing makes special provision for horses.
