The Project
Undertake Improvements to approx 85 km (50 miles) of motorway between Leicester and Chesterfield.
Assess the potential of Active Traffic Management (ATM) technology and other improvement techniques as appropriate to increase capacity and to ensure best use of the existing motorway.
Provision of a Bypass for the village of Kegworth.
M1 J25 - J28 Widening
On Monday 6th August 2007, the Government decided to proceed with the widening of the M1 between J25 and J28. Work on this section started on October 29, 2007, with Start of Works public exhibitions held on October 18, 25 and 27, 2007.

M1 J21 - J25 and J28 - J30 Improvements including Junctions and Kegworth Bypass
The strategy for delivering improvements on the M1 from Junctions 21 to 30 (either side of the widening currently under construction between Junctions 25-28) is currently under review.
Following the successful trial of Active Traffic Management (ATM) on the M42 and the publication on 4th March 2008 of the Department for Transport’s “Advanced Motorway Signalling and Traffic Management Feasibility Study”, the Secretary of State has requested that the Highways Agency assess the feasibility of an ATM solution on the M1.
The review will determine whether ATM will provide a better value-for-money alternative for improving capacity and journey times on the motorway than widening to four lanes.
An announcement on the preferred solution will be made in due course following the completion of this review.
