Statement from the Highways Agency

21st May 2008 - Highways Agency statement in response to questions about the planned removal of signs on the A1 in Northumberland which give the number of casualties

The Highways Agency said:

"These signs were introduced on the A1 in Northumberland in the early 90's as part of a trial to see if they would improve driver behaviour, reduce speed and improve safety. The signs were installed in agreement with local stakeholders, including the police and the local authority.

"In this instance we don't think the signs have been effective in reducing speeding and therefore the decision has been taken to remove them. The signs will be removed from the A1 as part of planned roadworks (this both limits any delays to drivers and keeps costs to a minimum).

"It is normal practice for the Highways Agency to review existing signing in accordance with latest sign design requirements and standards to see if the signs need to be replaced or upgraded or removed.

"However, since the trial started numerous maintenance and safety improvements schemes have been carried out on this section of the A1."

Issued by the Highways Agency press office.
