England's Motorway Roadworks Best in Europe

Roadworks on England's motorways are better overall than the rest of Europe particularly in managing traffic and safety. This is despite having some of the heaviest traffic, an independent survey by the AA Motoring Trust and its European partners has shown.

We are pleased that we are, again, overall the best in Europe, but we are not complacent. We continue to seek the best methods available to minimise the disruption and safety risks from roadworks whilst keeping traffic moving.

Of the 50 sites surveyed in Europe, the Holmesdale Tunnel works on the M25 came second. These works were completed three months ahead of schedule without a single reportable accident for roadworkers in 1.7 million hours of work.

Our current roadwork improvement programme includes:  reviewing the speed limits for roadworks without compromising safety; collecting and analysing roadworker accident near misses; and making the use of sequential flashing lights along the approach to roadworks mandatory on our network from early 2008. We are also scientifically evaluating innovative ways of improving safety at road works, including the use of VMS signs to provide journey times taking into account anticipated roadwork delays.
