Highways Agency: How We Work
How the Highways Agency Works
Our aim is to provide our customers with safe roads, reliable journeys and good quality travel information, whilst respecting the environment.
We have made significant progress in some key areas for the future including the introduction of the National Traffic Control Centre; the introduction of HA Traffic Officers in the West Midlands and on parts of the M25; progress with our pilot on the M42 and proposals for introducing a car-sharing lane on the M1 between Luton and St Albans.
Safety remains a key priority. Our roads are already among the safest in Europe. We will continue to make our contribution towards meeting the Government road safety target by reducing the accidents in which people are killed or seriously injured on our network by some 650 during the coming year.
Improving the reliability of journeys and reducing delays during accidents is a new key priority. Highways Agency Traffic Officers are being introduced to all our motorways, controlling incidents through new regional control offices. We shall work with the police and other partners to improve the level of service offered by our network.
The quality of traffic information we make available to the road user is increasing all the time. Where we can, we offer fast information about problems on the network and alternative routes. We aim to make a step change in improving driver information.
We estimate that approximately 1,100 miles of trunk road will be repaired annually over the next three years. To reduce disruption we will continue to ensure that much of our routine maintenance is done outside peak periods.
In providing and maintaining these assets, we will continue to take our environment responsibilities very seriously. We have put in place a number of initiatives to support recycling of materials, biodiversity and air quality.
We work closely with Local Planning Authorities and Regional Planning Bodies on forward land use plans - the new Regional Spatial Strategies - to ensure that planning, development and strategic transport issues are better linked in the future.
The Government is making a significant investment in the Highways Agency to allow us to take our plans forward. The quality of the service we deliver depends on the actions of our staff and our supply chain partners. We are introducing a radical internal change programme in order to put customers at the heart of our business.
Smarter Traffic Management
Our strategy is to deliver a better service to our customers by harnessing the benefits of Traffic Officers on the road, new traffic management systems, better information about road conditions and our traditional engineering expertise. We will be using the latest technology to monitor traffic flows on the network and direct and manage traffic more effectively.
