The Highways Agency's Position on Sustainable Development
Media Briefing: What is the Highways Agency's Position on Sustainable Development?
The Government is committed to increasing housing supply in key areas whilst ensuring the integrity of the transport system, including our motorways and A-roads. A new development may affect strategic roads in a variety of ways. From general increases in traffic, to building new accesses on to major roads, each impact needs considering before a planning application can be approved.
The Highways Agency contributes greatly to this process by:
- Looking for long-term solutions through discussions with developers, planning authorities and government agencies.
- Supporting the Government's development plans whilst maintaining the effectiveness of our motorways and A-roads.
- Working with local authorities, on behalf of the Department for Transport, in looking at the effects a proposed development may have.
- Encouraging early contact from developers whose proposals may affect the motorways and A-roads.
If the planning proposal impacts on motorways or A-roads it is essential that the Highways Agency is consulted. The Agency may add conditions to the planning permission or in some cases, if suggested improvements are incapable of accommodating predicted traffic, may direct the planning permission not to be granted.
Overall the Agency aims to facilitate sustainable development whilst ensuring that developments maintain or improve access to the roads.
