Latest milestone reached on A453 as traffic starts using new section of road

Traffic using the A453 in Nottinghamshire will switch to a new section of road next week as part of the Highways Agency’s ongoing improvements.

The existing road will be closed between West Leake Junction and Parkway Junction from 8pm on Wednesday 20 August to 5.30am the following morning at which point vehicles will be transferred to the new westbound carriageway.

The new carriageway will operate as a two-way road rather than dual carriageway until the scheme is complete.

Highways Agency Assistant Project Manager Robin Jackson said:

"This is another exciting milestone in the widening of the A453. Switching traffic to the new carriageway will enable us to bring the existing eastbound carriageway up to the same standard as the westbound and brings the scheme’s completion a step closer."

"We advise road users to allow extra time for their journeys during the overnight closure and to take care and pay attention to the new road layout on the morning of Thursday 21 August as there will be a significant change to get used to."

During the overnight closure through traffic will be diverted from M1 junction 24 to junction 25 and along the A52 to its junction with the A453, or vice versa.

A second switch is planned for the section of road between the M1 and the canal overbridge near the Parkway junction in the coming weeks. The date for this will be confirmed nearer the time.

Road users are also reminded that overnight closures of the southern bridge at M1 junction 24 continue throughout August and September and contractors are still on track to close that part of the junction for two full weekends – 12 to 15 and 19 to 22 September.

Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, particularly if they have a flight to catch at East Midlands Airport.
