Area 6

Area 6 is one of 14 Highways Agency areas in England, managing the following trunk roads in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.

  • A11 between M11 and A47
  • A12(S) between M25 Junction 28 and Ipswich
  • A12(N) between Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft
  • A14 between Girton Road Overbridge, Cambridge and Felixstowe
  • A47 between Peterborough and Great Yarmouth
  • A120(W) just east of Stansted to Marks Tey (A12)
  • A120(E) Colchester to Harwich

The area is managed by a dedicated Highways Agency team. On 1 June 2008, Atkins Limited became our sole service provider under a new Managing Agent Contract (MAC).

This is not the only change that is about to happen in Area 6.  As adjacent areas change to new MAC contracts, Area 6 will see some changes to the network is currently manages and will, for the first time, include a length of motorway.  From 1 September, the first set of changes will be:

  • The addition of the M11 between Junctions 7 and 9
  • The addition of the A120 between the M11 and the east of Stansted
  • The loss of the A14 between Girton Road Overbridge and A14/A142 at Exning (Junction 37) to Area 8
  • The loss of the A11 between A14 and M11 to Area 8.

Further additions to the Area 6 network will take place in April and July 2009 and this web page will be updated to reflect those changes nearer the time.

Peter Smith, Area Performance Manager for Area 6, said:

“This is a great period of change for Area 6.  We have moved away from a Managing Agent/Term Maintenance Contractor to a MAC for the first time and we will face some challenges as the network this area manages undergoes considerable change, particularly with the addition of the M11 Junctions 7 – 9.  I hope that the addition of a motorway will bring us closer working relationships with the Traffic Officer Service.

In the meantime, I am pleased to say that it is “business as usual” and there is a full working year planned with major maintenance work programmed for the A12 Kelvedon Bypass this autumn, works on the A47 Saddlebow, Kings Harbour and Ouse bridges at Kings Lynn and a full programme of smaller Local Network Management Schemes across the area.

We have also received the results of the November 2007 – April 2008 Area Road User Satisfaction Survey (ARUSS) carried out by Faber Maunsell on behalf of the Highways Agency, where approximately 66 people were interviewed every month between November and April.  The latest results can be downloaded from the Area 6 Publications Page.
