Our Winter Work

Area 9: Winter Salting and Snow Clearance

  • Although our vehicles are generally known as “Gritters” they actually spread salt not grit.
  • Our winter salting and snow clearance season starts before the first sign of winter with an event called a “Snowdesk”.  This computer-based simulation tests our readiness.  It is undertaken by all those who, in real life, are involved in bad weather situations, from the weather forecasting to “gritting”.
  • We have identified “gritting” routes throughout the region and these are monitored and controlled by AmeyMouchel.
  • We try to put salt down on the roads before ice forms - so you will often see our “gritters” out before the road surface temperature has fallen below freezing.
  • Our “gritters” can also be turned into snow ploughs for extreme wintry conditions.

Did you know that salt does not instantaneously melt snow – it needs the action of traffic to turn the salt into brine in order to melt the snow?
