The Severn Bridges

The M48 Severn Bridge and the M4 Second Severn Crossing are two of Europe's most important bridges, providing a vital road link between Wales and South-West England.

The M48 Severn Bridge was opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 8 September 1966 to replace the existing ferry service from Aust to Beachley, cutting travel times considerably and opening up transport links between Wales and the South West. However due to increasing traffic flows, in 1986 the decision was taken to proceed with the Second Severn Crossing.

In 1990 the Government awarded Severn River Crossing plc (SRC) the contract to design, build and finance the Second Severn Crossing. SRC also took over the responsibility of maintaining and operating the M48 Severn Bridge.

Construction on the new crossing started in 1992 and the bridge was opened in June 1996.
