How We Manage Our Roads

The Highways Agency is responsible for managing, maintaining and improving the strategic road network in England on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport. This public asset is worth over £72 billion and provides a vital service to commerce and industry and to the lives of individuals and communities.

Our network includes various types of road ranging from motorways carrying up to 200,000 vehicles per day to single carriageway trunk roads (the major A roads) carrying fewer than 10,000 vehicles per day.  View a map of our network

In this section you can find out more about how we manage and maintain these roads and plan for the future. If you are looking for a particular road project, please use the Road Projects search. Real time traffic information can be found on our Traffic England service

Please note that this website only contains information about the roads we manage.

What about other roads in the UK?

Other roads in England are managed by local authorities. A list of these, with web links, is provided by the Local Government Association. Trunk roads and motorways in Scotland are the responsibility of Transport Scotland; those in Wales of the Welsh Assembly Government.
