The Project Control Framework
This framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major road improvement projects.
Tolls
Tolls
The level of tolls for the Severn Crossings were agreed by Parliament with the making of the legislation governing the Crossings, the Severn Bridges Act 1992. This legislation provides that toll charges are revised once a year in line with a formula related to the retail price index and are rounded to the nearest 10p.
Tolls at Severn are only charged in one direction (westbound). For the current tolls prices, please visit the Severn River Crossing website at http://www.severnbridge.co.uk/.
Payments
Up until recently, the Concessionaire, Severn River Crossing Plc (SRC) was prevented by legislation from accepting payment at the tolls by any means other than cash.
However, we recognise the potential benefits to drivers to be able to pay by credit/debit card and amendments to the legislation have been made to allow card payments at the tolls. The Regulations came into force on 19 March 2010 and card payments were made available for the week of the Ryder Cup and again from 5 November 2010.
The current system requires road users to enter their PIN number into a hand held device, we therefore encourage road users to pay by cash for the quickest transit. We anticipate that a permanent card payment system which will not require PIN input will be fully operational in early 2011.
TAG System
SRC operates a toll pre-payment scheme - the Severn TAG. This is an Automatic Vehicle Identification System which allows participants to travel westbound across both bridges without having to pay in cash. TAG holders also benefit from discounted toll rates and queuing time at the tolls is reduced. To find out more about this scheme, please visit SRC's website.
