The Project Control Framework
This framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major road improvement projects.
M1
The M1 is a north-south arterial route stretching the 193.6 miles between London to the north of England at Leeds.
The first section of the M1 opened in November 1959 and boasted the first motorway service area at Watford Gap, or the Blue Boar as it was known at the time.
The M1 was extended south into London in 1977 and north of the M62 to Aberford at the A1(M) in 1999. It now links a number of major centres including Luton, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield.

- The M1 widening project between J6a - 10 was started in March 2006 and officially opened on Friday 23 January 2009. This scheme reconstructed three junctions, widened 10 miles of motorway to four lanes and used 1.22m tonnes of aggregate.

- In the early days of the M1 there was no speed limit, no central reservation, no crash barriers and no motorway lighting. An estimated 13,000 vehicles used the motorway each day when it opened.
