A1 Tyneside to Bewick
Pilot Case Study: A1 Tyneside to Berwick
Route
The study looks at a 60-mile stretch of the A1 between Tyneside and Berwick on the Scottish border. The route runs through the urban outskirts of Newcastle and Gateshead where it carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day up to the very rural areas of north Northumberland where only up to around 10,000 vehicles use the road each day.
Study
The Highways Agency's A1 Route Management Strategy roadshow was visited by 1,139 people during its five-day tour of Newcastle and Northumberland. The roadshow enabled the Agency to talk directly with road users about the A1 from Tyneside to Berwick in order to find out what people thought or expected in terms of the development of the road.
Neil Taylor, Highways Agency Area Manager for Northumberland, said: "The response we had from the public was tremendous and we were very pleasantly surprised at the number of people who took the time to come and see us.
"We have collected the views of people at all the venues and my team and I will now work through the response cards to pick up on what people were saying. Everyone had some interesting views and came up with problems and ideas, which we had not thought of before and these in particular will be looked at very carefully.
"We recognise the importance of this route and we want to see it develop into a safer and more enjoyable route for everyone who uses it."
Strategy
The strategy is now being finalised, taking on board public comments.
Aims are to improve safety for all road users, make best use of the existing infrastructure and reduce traffic delays and the impact of traffic on the local surroundings. Plans also include improving information and facilities for all road users and improving co-ordination with other transport operators.
