The Project Control Framework

This framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major road improvement projects.

Air Quality Chideock

Improving Air Quality in the Village of Chideock

The Chideock Air Quality Action Plan is a partnership with West Dorset District Council, Dorset County Council and the Highways Agency.  The Action Plan sets out measures to improve the levels of air quality throughout the village.

Journey time delay

The Department for Transport produces a regular series of National Statistics on congestion on inter-urban roads; which consists of all motorway and trunk roads managed by the Highways Agency. This is used to monitor journey time reliability of the trunk road network. It is measured as the average delay in minutes per 10 miles experienced on the slowest 10% of journeys for each monitored route. The Agency has developed a 'proxy' congestion indicator to manage its operations which enables congestion to be estimated at local levels such as within Chideock.

In the last 12 months on the A35 through Chideock (between A3052 and A3066 in both directions) performance has improved with the average vehicle delay on the slowest 10% of journeys falling from 8.71 to 8.52 minutes eastbound (a decrease of 2%) and from 3.26 minutes westbound (a decrease of 16%) per 10 miles.

By making journeys more reliable we are contributing to an improving air quality.

General travel advice to reduce pollution

  • Avoid using cars for short journeys - combine trips, or alternatively, walk, cycle or take a bus.
  • Drive gently - rapid starts and sudden stops will increase fuel consumption and air pollution. Use higher gears when traffic conditions allow.
  • Share your journeys - go shopping with friends or neighbours, take a colleague to work or join a car share club http://www.carsharedorset.com/
  • Switch off the engine when stationary - especially when stuck in traffic or stopping more than a minute.
