Background Information

When a new bypass took the A500 away from the villages of Shavington and Hough in 2003, the original road was renumbered C841 and handed over to Cheshire County Council. However, responsibility for the bridges carrying this road over the railway - and their eventual replacement - remained with the Highways Agency.

There were three bridges. The original was built in 1905 but for safety reasons it was 'retired' completely and covered by an over-bridge in 1990. In 1993, a Bailey bridge was built alongside to cater for eastbound traffic.

What are we doing?

Work is being carried out in three seperate phases.  In Phase One we carried out maintenance work on the over-bridge and the Bailey bridge to ensure continued safe operation.  In Phase Two we demolished the original Hough Railway Bridge during the Christmas 2006 break.  A temporary pedestrian footbridge and new traffic lights were also installed.  Phase Three works will be to construct a new bridge.

Phase Three - Replacement of the Road Bridge over the West Coast Main Line Railway

Work started on Monday 7th January 2008  to build the new road bridge on Newcastle Road  (the C841), over the railway line at Hough.  This will be a permanent replacement for the existing bridge. Work is expected to last all year, with the present bridge being finally removed over the Christmas period, 2008.

We do not anticipate that there will be any road closures or diversions during the time of the works. The existing arrangements with single lane traffic controlled by traffic lights will be maintained throughout the project.  The work will be undertaken Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 5.00pm although there will be some weekend and night time working when required to accommodate construction over the railway line.

When the scheme is complete and the new bridge is opened, the existing bridge structure will be removed and the land it occupies will be returned to the landowner.  The new bridge will be of substantial construction and will carry two-way traffic without any restrictions.
