The Project Control Framework

On 1st April 2008 we launched the Project Control Framework. The Framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major improvement projects.

What is MOVA?

What is MOVA?

MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) is an adaptive traffic signal control system.

How does it work?

MOVA uses advanced traffic control algorithms to increase capacity and minimise delay at traffic signals.  The algorithms are based on detector activations, typically from inductive-loop detectors buried in the road surface.

Where is it used?

MOVA is in use at over 1000 sites in the UK, covering a range of junctions from large high-speed to smaller suburban and even urban sites.  MOVA also provides pedestrian facilities, facilities for emergency and priority control (e.g. for buses), and can be configured to operate differently according to time of day and week.  MOVA has also been used at Puffin crossings, signalised roundabouts, and closely spaced junctions ("Linked" MOVA).

What are the benefits?

A UK Department of Transport funded study showed an average 13% decrease in delay at 20 junctions running with MOVA compared with standard VA (Vehicle Actuation).
