The Project
A major refurbishment of the A12 Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft started in January 2007. During the scheme all the electrical, mechanical and control systems of the lifting bridge will be refurbished or replaced. This work will ensure that the bridge remains operational for many years to come. The Highways Agency has awarded the contract for the works to Bosch Rexroth.
Bridge Closures
The Bascule Bridge will be closed overnight (from 8pm to 6am) on 25 and 26 of June.
Travel during the closures
To ease congestion, we are asking the public, businesses and other organisations likely to be affected to think about their activities during the closures and, if possible, use alternative means of travel.
Please consider leaving your car at home and walking, cycling, or taking the train. Alternatively, share a lift with friends or colleagues, or avoid driving into the town centre.
Businesses and other organisations should consider amending their activities or routines to help reduce congestion during the closures: for instance, by altering delivery dates or working times.
Pedestrians, including people with disablities, and dismounted cyclists, may use a temporary footbridge next to the Bascule Bridge to cross Lake Lothing during the closures.
Other travel tips and suggestions
Do not use your car for short journeys. If your journey is less than half a mile consider walking or cycling.
Only travel during the rush hour if you absolutely have to.
Time shift your journey, setting off a few minutes earlier or later could make all the difference to your journey time.
Car sharing can benefit the environment by lowering emissions and at the same time can allow you more time for other activities. Sharing the school-run, for example reduces congestion and fuel.
Consider planning as many jobs as possible in one trip. Aim to get as much as you can out of your journey. Two jobs in one trip is better than two trips!
Avoid congested areas and so reduce your travel time.
