Construction Update
Construction Progress A11 Attleborough Bypass Improvement: March 2006
Construction:
As a result of the winter period being drier than usual, we are pleased to say that construction of the A11 Attleborough Bypass is proceeding at a good rate. We have completed most of the advanced works slightly ahead of programme.
Bulk soil removal is well advanced and we have commenced construction of the slip roads at Queens Road and the new layout of Wroo Road. We are also constructing the slip road at the West Carr Road junction.
Environment:
Another result of the dry weather is that the birds have started to nest earlier than usual and we have had to ensure that all the trees and vegetation have been suitably cleared before their return.
There are two Environmental managers on the site who oversee all activities that impact on the environment.
Our next challenge is the capture and relocation of any water voles in the existing section of Attleborough Stream before it is diverted away from the existing road.
The new channels to carry the stream under Ellingham Road, Deopham Road and the access road to Attleborough Hall farm area have all been constructed.
Structures:
The extension to the existing underpass to Attleborough Hall has commenced.
The basic structure of the retaining wall at Hillsend is now complete and this just awaits the finishing touches.
Queen's Road junction is an area of major activity. Foundations for the new bridge under the Norwich bound lane for the A11 are complete.
We are constructing the first phase of the new junction at Blackthorn Road off Queens Road. The next phase will be to locally divert traffic onto the new section to allow us to construct the rest of the junction.
West Carr Non Motorised User (NMU) Bridge
Fabrication of the steel supports for the West Carr NMU bridge will be starting shortly. This bridge will provide safe access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders to cross the A11 at West Carr Road. The bridge has been designed as an arch, using curved steel tubes to allow minimal impact to the landscape.
The final colour of the bridge has still to be decided. During a recent vist to the site by Dr Stephen Ladyman, the Transport Minister, the issue of the colour was raised. His emphatic response was to allow the local community to choose! We have now requested the assistance of our new design consultants, years 5 & 6 of Attleborough Junior School, not only to choose the preferred colour but to design a plaque for the opening ceremony. The bridge is scheduled to be erected in the Autumn and will involve an overnight closure of the A11.
