New electronic message signs will be installed alongside the M4 and M32 near Bristol to give drivers more reliable journey times, and help to ensure better safety and improved traffic flows.

When completed the new signs will give drivers real-time advance warnings of road conditions including information about accidents, queues, delays and temporary speed limits.

Work began on 28 November 2005 on the new system, which will be installed between Junctions 18 (Bath) and 20 (Almondsbury) and on the M32 between Junction 2 and the M4/M32 Junction. The work is due to be completed by spring 2007.

The system includes motorway message signs and new CCTV cameras to improve driver information, together with infrastructure including cross carriageway cable ducts, roadside equipment cabinets and traffic detector loops buried in the carriageway.

The CCTV pictures will feed in to the Highways Agency’s new regional traffic control centre at Avonmouth, helping operators to monitor the carriageway and respond more quickly to accidents and incidents.

During the work there will be hard shoulder closures and narrow traffic lanes past the works area. A temporary 50mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of drivers and the workforce. There will be night time lane closures and some slip road closures with diversions when needed.
