The Project

The existing carriageway of the A4 at Saltford, between Bristol and Bath was at the end of its effective life and extensive remedial works was required.

What was involved and why was it necessary?

The Highways Agency carried out major reconstruction and resurfacing of the carriageway. The road was heavily cracked with marked deterioration of the lower macadam layers. A strengthening overlay would not be suitable as a long term measure, so a deep repair was to be made to rectify these defects. New drainage was also integral to the reconstruction as the existing highway drainage pipes were blocked and collapsing. Reconstruction of the road minimises the need for ongoing repairs to structural failures.

Thank you

The A4 is a major route between Bristol and Bath and the repairs caused inconvenience to many people. This project was essential to ensure the future integrity of the road and the work would be carried out as quickly as possible. The Highways Agency would like to thank residents, businesses and motorists for their patience during this time.

Works Completed

The A4 at Saltford was reopened to traffic on schedule on the 13th September. Again, The Highways Agency would like to thank the residents, businesses and motorists for their patience during these essential works.
