How we will widen the motorway
Cuttings and embankments
We will need to alter embankment and cutting slopes to provide space for the extra lane in each direction. We will use a range of engineering methods such as retaining walls, soil nailing or steepening of existing slopes. The main point to note is that all the work will be undertaken within the existing motorway boundary; no land will need to be acquired. This will also minimise disturbance to the local environment and residents.
Bridges
We will be widening some underbridges, and replacing one overbridge, within the existing land. Parapet heights will be modified where necessary to meet current Highways Agency standards on bridges which carry designated bridleways.
