Supplementary Public Consultation

Update

In July 2002, two public consultation exhibitions were held to present a number of possible improvements to the Kingsway Junction, Markeaton Junction and Abbey Hill Junction on the A38 in Derby to reduce congestion and improve safety.

In response to comments made at the exhibitions and the publication of a study report, the Secretary of State for Transport supported the improvements in principle and asked the Highways Agency to carry out further design work at Abbey Hill Junction before making a decision on whether to include the scheme in the Government's Targeted Programme of Improvements.

This consultation is being held to seek people's views on the latest proposals at Abbey Hill.

In Option 1

This junction arrangement would have a significant impact on the residential properties and business premises in this area. The junction cost estimate is £26.2m.

In this option the A38 is further to the northwest than in Option 1. This junction arrangement would slightly reduce the impact on the residential properties and business premises in the area. The junction cost estimate is £25.3m.

Option 3

A proposal to replace the existing roundabout with a conventional two level junction.

In Option 3

The A38 would be realigned on an embankment to the south and east of its current position. The existing roundabout would be enlarged but retained at ground level with the A38 crossing on two bridges.

This junction would minimise the impact on the residential and business premises north and west of the A38. However it would require land to the south and east of the existing junction. The junction cost estimate is £24.8m.
