The Project
The widening of the M25 between Junctions 8 and 10 was carried out as one of the first Design & Build contracts run by the HA with the additional lanes opening to traffic in September 1997. Since that time, some areas of the concrete carriageway had become defective and temporary repairs had to be carried out by the Agency's Area 5 Maintenance Contractor.
This scheme was to replace the temporary repairs and other defective areas of the carriageway, with permanent pavement quality concrete. The repairs were carried out in 3km long sections commencing on the anticlockwise carriage at Junction 10, in July 2006 and were completed in December 2006.
In addition, the opportunity was taken to replace the drainage manhole covers situated in Lane 1 adjacent to Junction 9 with heavier duty units to withstand the increasing volume and weight of vehicles.
In April 2007 contractors returned to the M25 Junction 8 to 10 to fill in parts of the concrete surface damaged during the 2006 repairs. This could not be carried out at the end of the works in November 2006 due to cold temperatures. The cold would have slowed down the overnight setting of the filler material, resulting in the road not being ready to be reopened in time for the morning rush hour. The less cold temperatures in April enabled the setting to be complete within the overnight schedule, allowing the road to be fully open during peak times and minimising any disruption.
