The Project
The Highways Agency has completed construction of the new Leafy Lane foot and bridleway bridge over the M4 near Dauntsey in Wiltshire.
The old pedestrian footbridge was thirty five years old, and was nearing the end of its life, and the design restricted use of the hard shoulder due to its height above the road. The higher clearance provided by the new bridge means that the hard shoulders beneath can now be used by high sided vehicles and by the emergency services.
In addition to improving safety beneath, the new structure is safer above. Designed with the needs of riders taken into account it uses compressed rubber tiles which provide a softer, quieter surface and help horses to be more sure-footed when crossing. Raised sides and solid infill panels also prevent horses seeing traffic passing underneath. The chances of a horse becoming frightened and bolting are significantly reduced by the new structure.
