Route Functions
The functions that the route serves now, and in the future are as follows:
National
- Provides a significant transport link between the Midlands and Lincolnshire.
- Provides part of an alternative transport link for the movement of freight from the ports of Grimsby & Hull to the Midlands and South.
- It is part of the Midlands to North East Strategic Diversion System for motorways and trunk roads.
- Provides part of a significant freight transport link with East Midlands Airport.
- Provides for major northeast - southwest movements through the East Midlands between the M1 and A1.
Regional
- Provides the major transport link between regional centres of population and employment including Leicester, Lincoln and Newark-on-Trent.
- Forms a major transport artery for conurbations 'off-route' e.g. Nottingham, Loughborough and Melton Mowbray.
- Provides access for tourism and leisure.
- A major route to serve industrial and commercial development.
Local
- Provides distributor function around both small and large population centres.
- Provides a bypass for through traffic around towns such as Leicester, Lincoln and Newark-on-Trent.
- Provides local and commuter access to numerous settlements; this is sometimes the only access as in the case of Farndon and Syerston.
- Provides significant levels of agricultural access.
- Provides links between communities.
