The Project

Work to increase the level of grip by roughening sections of the road surface between Beddingham Roundabout and the A259 in Newhaven, East Sussex, started Tuesday 8 August 2006 and finished on Thursday 10 August 2006.

The measures have reduced the risk of skidding, particularly in wet weather by increasing the level of grip for vehicles along this 4.3 mile (7km) section of A26 where the surface, over time, has been smoothed by traffic. The work took place at five separate sections of the road which are on bends.

At each location, the road was roughened by using a special machine containing hundreds of tips shaped like chisels.

Traffic Management

Work was carried out between 0930 and 1600, during which time the A26 was educed to one lane to provide a safe working area.

Temporary traffic lights controlled traffic between the Beddingham Roundabout and the junction of A259 Newhaven.
