On 1st April 2008 we launched the Project Control Framework. The Framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major improvement projects.

Environmental Issues

We have worked closely with the Lake District National Park (LDNP) and other environmental bodies, to ensure the scheme blends with the existing landscape as far as possible.

The Highways Agency agreed that stone walls, constructed to a design agreed with the LDNP, would be used as the Highway Boundary.

Earthworks mounding and native planting have been used to reduce the visual impact of the road on residential properties.

Badger fencing has been erected where badger activity has been noted.

We have provided a new home for bats which previously roosted in Black Beck Hall at Ayside. We have converted the existing pigsty into a building suitable for bats, and Black Beck Hall has been demolished. Bat feeding routes will also be maintained.

Special ponds are used to manage water flow into local water courses. The ponds will slow run-off water to neighbouring field and filter pollutants and silt.

Earth slopes have been shaped to blend with the local landscape, and special seed mix, agreed with the LDNP has been used in some areas.

Our plans to get closer to nature include:

  • 8km of dry stone walls
  • 8km of badger fencing
  • New hedge containing 3,000 plants
  • 65,000 Plants/Tree/shrubs
  • 7 badger/otter tunnels
