The Project

We made improvements at Junction 44 of the M6 to increase safety and reduce congestion. We also widened the roundabout to accommodate the proposed Carlisle Northern Development Route.

Why the work was carried out?

Junction 44 is a split-level roundabout and motorway junction on the outskirts of Carlisle where the A7 passes over it and the A689 connects. The two bridges required maintenance to prolong their life and the road surface was wearing out and required replacing. With the introduction of a new arm to the roundabout for the Carlisle Northern Development Route (CNDR), more lanes were required to ensure that the traffic flowed around the junction safely. We combined the maintenance works and modifications for CNDR to minimise delays to the public.

How long did the works last?

The works took place between August 2006 and January 2007 and was done in stages to minimise disruption to road users and local businesses.

What are the benefits of the scheme?

  • Reduced congestion and delays at peak times at the junction.
  • A safer junction with fewer accidents.
