Wildlife
One of the main priorities in the early stages of the project was to establish a detailed understanding of the local wildlife and habitats. Following on from the extensive pre-construction assessment and fieldwork, we continue to monitor the habitats identified and minimise the potential impact of our work.
Previous newsletters highlighted some of the additional ecological issues we have identified. We are currently finalising our Environmental Management Plan and will continue to provide you with information in the future.
The A2/A282 area contains a wide range of habitats and protected animals that include reptiles, bats, badgers and dormice. We are working hard to ensure that we cause as little disruption to them as possible.
Darenth Wood SSSI
- Darenth Wood is an important site classed as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest); it is immediately adjacent to the construction site. The area will be fenced during the construction phase to protect it.
Dormice
- To avoid harm to these rare species and minimise impact on their habitat, scrub clearance is carried out by hand.
Bats
- Bat surveys were conducted before work started on the scheme. New habitats have been created near Darenth wood to provide a roost for the bats.
Reptiles
- New habitats have been created, made up of grassland, log pile and rubble.
Wood Ants
- Wood ants from the A2 verge have been moved to a new habitat near Darenth Wood.
