Archaeology
Highway improvement projects such as this A2/A282 Dartford Improvement Scheme offer rare opportunities to investigate archaeological remains.
Over several years a series of studies have assessed potential archaeological sites to decide where more detailed exploration would be needed before the A2/A282 Dartford Improvement could be built.
From January to June 2006 archaeological excavations were carried out on these sites. The trial trenches dug across the area have shown features from a range of different periods in the past.
These findings are generally of Palaeolithic (c. 300,000 BC), Neolithic (4,000- 2,300 BC), Bronze Age (2300-750BC), Iron Age (750BC- 43AD), Roman (43AD-410AD) and Saxon (410AD-1066AD).
There was also a scattering of features indicating that the area continued to be farmed from the medieval period to the present day.
In addition we have discovered a WWII anti-aircraft battery which was here to protect factories in the Darent valley.
A 50kg German incendiary bomb is currently on display in the Visitor Centre.
We will continue to carry out further exploratory trenching and geophysical surveys. Expert archaeologists will be on hand for the entire project. We will report on their findings in the future.
