Project
This scheme involved local widening of the A556 around the junction, in order to provide space for additional lanes for traffic turning right into Bucklow Hill Lane, Chapel Lane and A5034 Mereside Road. These proposals should improve traffic flows through the junction as vehicles waiting to turn right will be much less likely to obstruct those travelling straight ahead.
Other safety benefits at this junction include the installation of new, ‘intelligent’, signal control. In addition, the section of carriageway which runs through this junction was re-surfaced with new low-noise material. A new island was also constructed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the A556.
A556 Improvements
We have carried out a series of improvements on the A556 and connecting roads between October 2006 and March 2007. Our aims of reducing congestion, improving safety and making journey times more reliable are particularly important for this route that carries over 50,000 vehicles per day, and serves as the primary link between the M6 and M56.
These improvements were procured via the Construction Management Framework. Find out more about this type of procurement.
The improvements are made up of six different schemes at various points along the A556, please use the links at the top right hand side of this page for information on the other schemes.
