Project
Works are needed to repair the piers that support the M4 elevated section at junctions 1 to 3 between Chiswick and Heston.
There will not be any road works on the M4 as access to the supports underneath the M4 will be from the A4.
Why are the works necessary?
The supports carrying the elevated section of the M4 have deteriorated due to water seeping through from above. This has caused corrosion of the steel reinforcement supports. If left a weight restriction would need to be in place on the M4. This would result in an increase of heavy goods vehicles using the A4, which would have an environmental impact on the local residents.
When?
Phase 1 of this work began in November 2006 and was completed in March 2007.
Phase 2 of the works began in July 2007 and were partially completed by October 2007.
Phase 3 of the work will take place from 4 August 2008 to December 2008.
What will the work involve?
- Concrete repairs to the supports
- Providing long-term protection of the supports
- This is done using techniques specially designed for this scheme
What are the benefits?
- Concrete repairs will improve the durability and appearance of the elevated section of the M4.
- Protecting the supports will ensure safety and load-carrying capacity for many years to come.
Traffic Management
To enable us to repair the supports to the M4 elevated section it will be necessary to gain access from the central reservation and carriageways of the A4 directly below.
Work to repair the supports will take place 24 hours a day 7 days a week, although no noisy works will be carried out during weekends.
During the day there will be a lane closed in each direction of the A4 to enable the work force to gain access to the M4. Two lanes will be maintained in each direction.
At night times between 21:30 and 05:30 there will only be one lane running in each direction of the A4 to get the work done in the shortest time possible with minimal disruption and delays.
