Facts and Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you have to close any lanes on the M4?
A.
On occasions, to ensure safe driving conditions, it will be necessary to install lane closures on the M4 to carry out routine maintenance works, e.g. debris clearing, maintaining carriageway drainage systems and carrying out emergency repairs to safety fences etc.

Q. Will this coincide with any other works?
A.
We have temporarily suspended routine full carriageway closures on the M4 J1-3 while we are working on the A4 below to minimise disruption to road users.  We have also liaised closely with Transport for London and London Borough of Hounslow in developing the project to minimise the impact on road users.

Q. Will there be additional noise due to the work?
A.
There will be some construction noise when we are carrying out the concrete repairs but we will do all we can to keep it to a minimum, particularly at night.

Q. How long will it last before it has to be done again?
A.
We are repairing 8 supports this year. Due to the nature and condition of the structure, we will need to return to repair the remaining supports as part of a rolling programme. However, at present, we are concentrating efforts to specific locations to minimise long-term disruptions avoid the need for repeat visits for many years to come.

Q. Is it unsafe at the moment?
A.
The existing supports to the M4 Elevated Section are not unsafe.  However, if nothing is done to prevent deterioration, in future years we would have to restrict the weight of vehicles using the M4 Elevated Section.

Q. If I need to speak to somebody about the works who can I contact?
A.
If you do have any queries please call our Highways Agency Information line on 08457 50 40 30.

Q. How long will it take?
A.
The works will take 5 months to complete.

Q. How much will it cost?
A.
Approximately £2,500,000

Q. Who is doing the work?

The work is being carried out by the contractor Birse Civils Limited.
